Domains.com Now Using Domain Name To Sell… Domains!

Posted on | September 10, 2009 | 11 Comments

Domains.com has changed their website and made it into a no-fees domain selling platform. Awesome! What once was a website that helped people register domains is now offering help to domain buyers and domain sellers–a win-win for the domaining industry with this wonderful domain name.

The most interesting part of the website is it’s simple to use–and that’s a great thing when you’re trying to attract people who might not exactly know how to navigate “complex” websites (I know a bunch of these types of people. They know how to go in and out and get what they want but nothing extra. Once you start adding new “features” into their heads about the site, they forget the old and go nuts…). You pretty much create a login and just communicate with the buyer.

There is no escrow service provided by Domains.com (probably in the future?) since they’re probably going for just a selling platform and nothing more as of now, but they do recommend that you use an Escrow service (affiliate link). I’d recommend doing a bit of searching about sellers if possible and definitely using an escrow service. Better safe than sorry!

Other then the basic information provided, the site really is pretty straight forward. If you have domains to sell it might be worth checking out. My only thought is let us say you have now have 10,000 domains added into the system. That makes visibility extremely limited and people might not want to do much scrolling to find some domains. There is a search bar to search for keywords and such and they’ve also created a “premiums” column for domains that stand out. Might be worth checking out if you have some excess domains before you let them expire! Some serviced provided by Domains.com: Buy domains, sell domains, register domains, and get hosting.

This was NOT a paid post. Purely written by me to just spread some information that will hopefully be beneficial to someone out there.

Thanks for covering this news. I spoke to Walter @ Domains.com before the announcement and am glad to see that the new site launch did not go un-noticed.

As I see it, the domain auction industry has had a pretty cozy time of it. The days of charging 10% for Craigslist-level listing services are over. The law of the web is pretty clear. If it *can* be free … It *will* be free. Fortunately, there is lots of value to be added in PROMOTING a domain to make sure that the right (retail) buyer of a domain is aware that the domain is for sale. A listing service alone is almost entirely commodity. The industry’s real challenge is to bring the retail buyers to the auction. And for this, the name “Domains.com” has some inherent brand value and implied trust.

Good luck to Walter + team @ Domains.com.

Definitely agree with the Domains.com brand helping–more then any other “domain” in the industry can. I’ve naturally visited domains.com just out of curiosity in the past, but have never been interested in what they had to offer previously. Now, they can try and reel in more and more users with their brand.

Thanks for the comments! Also wish them the best of luck!

The website may be easy to use, but I don’t like the I-frame solution they’re using. Why go back to website standards of the 1990’s in hunt for usability.

Is the need for a easy-to-use website that high when the users are trading domains? In my opinion, these users are very technically versed.
