I Might Be Sold on: “Bing.com Officially in Public Beta”

Posted on | June 1, 2009 | 19 Comments

bingBing.com looks like it’s in official public beta. The search engine has received much publicity since it’s Live.com’s successor in the Microsoft family, so it’s interesting to see what’s going to happen with it in the future. Live.com is already being forwarded to Bing.com.

Want a Bing.com joke? “Bing = But It’s Not Google.”

First impression? Familiar “Live.com” look that I have always slightly enjoyed. I enjoy looking at a nice page on the internet since they are sometimes hard to come across. I’m a pain in the ass to please, so simple and classy designs are my fav. when pulled off in the right way. I think I’m actually really liking the “Bing” logo. Hrm.

The search results? Obviously I’m going to be comparing it to Google. Differences? Yes, of course, but oddly enough, the results are SOMEWHAT the same for a lot of keywords I searched. Bing’s results are probably exactly the same as Live’s–the difference is i just never noticed Live’s. I do receive a good amount of traffic from Microsoft, so actually seeing those rankings today is, well, awesome.

Pros:
- Cool design
- Oddly, better search results (i think?). I might actually like the search results better then Yahoo’s (maybe this is the Yahoo killer?)
- “Cashback” shopping still there
- Search results page is nice and simple with good left-bar options
- Localized search “noticeable”

Cons:
- Not sure how “great” the results are unless I use it for research
- Seriously, you’re not going to let people search for porn? FAIL (let’s be honest here)

The search sex may return sexually explicit content.
To get results, change your search terms.

- People are already making fun of it

So, I might actually be giving them more credit then they deserve, but I think this might actually be something. It’s creative, but not exactly different then what was out there. Maybe a re-name was a smart idea? Hell, I may have already bought into the whole “yeah, this is actually better” when in reality I know it’s a “this is exactly the same as Live.com.” Either way, kudos to Microsoft. They will bring AdCenter, which I’m VERY excited about and we will see what’s up with that.

Will their whole version of “adsense/adwords”  be branded under bing?

Oh yeah, R.I.P General Motors. They have filed for bankruptcy.

Definitely. Bing has been a pretty decent tool for product comparison/shopping though.

The results? The more and more I use them the less and less and I go back (if that even makes sense), lol.

I switched to Bing. I like the interface better; I get more done with fewer keystrokes and clicks. Relevancy is okay. But I was really getting tired of the same white Google screen. I like variety. I also like their feedback system, but they are not doing anything to change their system to make it better.

    LOL at the photo!
Yeah, I also noticed that they don’t allow “sexual” searches. Bad news for guys huh? All in all, I think Bing can still improve. Hey, they’re no-Google, but hopefully, they’ll get there.

I think Bing has done well branding itself not as a search engine but as a “decision engine” and has definitely reeled me in with their “Bing Cashback”.

Maybe from there they can slowly evolve to pull in more users? Who knows, but they’ve definitely taken a different route rather than the traditional “search with us to research for homework”.
