Protecting Brands Article – Unlimited New TLDs Like .domaining or .media

It’s always been known that protecting a brand (or hell, even starting one) online is a pretty hard thing to do with the vast majority of TLDs available to developers/companies. Mainstream news has been catching onto ICANN’s little “get your own tld” pitch it has been making recently. Along with zillions of gtlds + cctlds out right now, ICANN is proposing for a tiny payment of $185,000 application fee and $25,000/year, you can have your own “exotic” or “generic” TLD. Tylenol.PM was used in this article or something like Coca.cola. Apparently this would be one of the “biggest marketing opportunities in history.” Yeah, just shrug aside it might also be one of the biggest marketing confusion as well. All of a sudden you’ll actually HAVE TO remember the TLD. Tylenol.drugs or Tylenol.pm? What was it again? Wait, Tylenol.sinuses? Or Tylenol.am? AH.

Anyways, here’s the USA Today article just written a couple hours ago regarding these new TLDs. Ron Jackson from DNJournal was quoted saying:

“A new extension likely would need a marketing push. Generic top-level domains, such as .travel, approved in 2005 and .biz, approved in 2001, have been slow to catch on”

True to some extent. If a company owns the rights to a specific TLD, I’m sure they’d be spending their money on marketing. Many fear generic domain prices would sugger greatly due to this. Instead of spending millions on domain names, a company can just toss out an application fee and get the tld and market that instead.

“ICANN is proposing for a tiny payment of $185,000 application fee ”

I think it’s important to point out that the application fee is NOT refundable even if your app is declined.
