So, Want To Transfer Your Domain To Another Registrar?

Posted on | March 8, 2009 | 3 Comments

Many people ask questions on how to transfer their name from one registrar to another. Some people end up having problems with their registrars (domain held hostage) and just want their domain out of there ASAP. Many domainers know what to do in the event of wanting to transfer a domain to another registrar, but others don’t. You need 1) To Unlock The Domain and 2) The Authorization Code. Those are pretty much the meat of what you need to do to transfer out your name. After you get those, you need to 3) Request a Transfer from the registrar you want the domain in and 4) Provide the authorization code along with the domain. The request to transfer is normally under a “transfer domains to” or “transfer in” tab in many registrars. Many people can get assistnce transfering domains into their accounts at the biggie registrars (Moniker, Godaddy, Dynadot, etc.), but getting the authorization code from other registrars is somewhat of a challenge at times. Here’s a link I found with actual directions on how to get your authorization code from various registrars:

http://www.wdbc.com/domain/transfer-authcode.cfm

Might not be a complete list, but there is a fair amount of registrars listed. EXTREMELY helpful information for most, I assume.

Also, if you are having problems with your current registrar, here is some advice I gave to a Namepros member who wants his domain out of his “no-name” registrar:

Fka200:

If it were me, I would probably try to call the registrar/send e-mails and see what they have to say about this. There has to be some sort of way to contact them (http://www.icann.org/en/registrars/…ified-list.html). If that doesn’t exactly work out in your favor,

If you’d like to submit a complaint about a registrar to ICANN, please send an email to <accredit@icann.org>. Please include your name, your company/organization (if any), your email address, your phone number (optional), the name of the registrar, the specific domain names involved (if any), and a brief description of your problem or complaint. ICANN will forward your complaint to the registrar for review and further handling.”

Also, just to ask, did you make sure you have the authorization code to transfer the domain and that the domain is unlocked? I’m assuming you can login to the registrar your domain is currently with to at least mange it (nameservers and such). That’s pretty much all that you need to transfer a domain out–that the domain is unlocked and the authorization code.

This can really cause headache sometimes though. I bought a good domain recently and I am still having a bit of trouble transfering it away.

Normally you have to wait 3-5 business days for the transfer to complete, at least it was the case with me.
