Newest Search Aggregator In Town: Fly.com Up And Running

Fly.com made it to the list of most expensive domains ever sold years ago, but the price was recently updated due to a recent re-selling of the domain name. It was sold for about $1.8 million in January 2009… only $300,000 more than the previous owner paid for it (Fly.com Appreciates 20% in 10 Years).
What was once a domain that seemed to always be monetized in the “travel search industry” for finding deals on plane tickets and what not, is now… uh… another domain that is again being monetized in the “travel search industry” (Fly.com’s history here). Hopefully this time it works? Anyways, I was looking up some prices on some plane tickets, and the prices weren’t that competitive. Random searches for random fares… just another travel search site. Great domain name, don’t get me wrong… but looking at the archive.org of the domain, it just seems like another (expensive) attempt at “I can do it better”. I just don’t see Fly.com as being unique. Does a great name only get you so far? And can others really do the same exact thing “better”? I’d say this domain would be wonderful if advertised at the same level as Hotwire and Expedia. It was nice to see it up and running (saw the placeholder a couple weeks ago with “coming soon”… but a disappointment at the look/features/prices. </commentary>

Its nice to see it developed but I dont see it being anything special – I hope Im proved wrong and it turns into a leading search portal but there are so many out there!

Yeah–for the heck of it last week I was just checking out different travel sites and WOW. There are hundreds of thousands of them out there… overwhelming! If there’s nothing unique offered to the table, then I just can’t see it making it’s money back quick, or else the previous owners who tried the same thing wouldn’t have sold.
