My “Domainers” 2009 Resolutions

Posted on | January 4, 2009 | 10 Comments

I think it’s always great to set up goals at the beginning of the year. I had some resolutions for 2008, which I think I did a pretty damn great job at following through with. The only difference between now and then is: more domains, more experience, more connections, more of… uh, pretty much everything. What exactly do I want to accomplish this year? Let’s see.

1) Be 2-3 years ahead with domain renewals

I’ve already managed to renew some expensive domains till 2010 (and even a few till 2013), but there are domains I’m 100% I’m not going to drop, so why not renew them for more years? Everytime renewal time comes along, it drives me insane. I have about 20 LLLL.com in redemption right now, and I’m not even sure if I want to keep those. Domains like that I would definitely just wait out and renew yearly, but others, I would like to have renewed for a longer period of time. This way, I spend the money now and am freed from renewals for a longer period of time (in my case, that equals less stress).

2) Better monetize my parked domains

I’ve been frantically moving my parked domains from provider to provider trying to make up for a huge loss in CPC over the last few months. So far I’ve been testing with a LOT of parking providers… just haven’t found the time to go domain-by-domain and figure out where I’d like to keep what where. For example: CPC of 15cents with 30% CTR vs CPC of 2-5cents with 75% CTR. Need to do the math on the domains and figure the average… extremely time consuming.

3) Networking

This is always a goal of mine. This year, I’d like to attend some more “domaining” get-togethers. I was at the ICANN conference a year or so ago, but that’s pretty much the biggest event I’ve been to. This year: get things together and just relax with some domainers and discuss things. Definitely something I want to do.

4) Do something unique online

Not exactly sure, but I want to do something “unique” online. I’m currently planning a pretty decent sized group project, so I’m hoping by February this’ll be done… but I’d like to be a part of something big on the internet. Something like TechCrunch.

5) Be a little picky about who I e-mail back

Getting marriage proposals from foreigners to get an American visa is extremely awkward.

6) Fix up Fka200.com

I’d really like to fix up the blog and just make it better overall. I’m not exactly sure what I want to do with it, but I managed to get something fresh up and running for a total of 10 minutes, and then I decided against it. I’d like to make it a little visually appealing, even though I think the current theme isn’t that bad. I’ve also been tinkering with the idea of monetizing the blog in some sort of way, but I’m not exactly sure what approach would be the best.

7) Be more relaxed

I definitely need to relax more often. Not a “domain” related resolution (or is it? domains do cause me to go nuts sometimes), but just for a better “life journey”.

8) Better business judgement

I’d like to just make more important business decisions in a better manner. I had some slip-ups in the last year, but all-in-all, I always wonder if they could have been avoided in a way.

9) Be more stingy

Yes, economic times are bad. I’d like to decide on which domain names I’m going to purchase in a more “controlled” manner. For example: buy based on development ideas, trying to resell, parking purposes (if profitable), and NOT on “whoa, that’s a cool domain”. The costs of domains add up… and I’m going to try and reduce fresh regs in order to make sure nothing bad during renewal times happen.

I think that’s about it! All the major resolutions are listed, so I think I’m good!

Yes, I know the “8″ turned into a smiley face. I’m going to leave it since it’s somewhat cool.

I sure am glad that you commented on my site, because I’ve been looking for a site to learn more about domain ownership. I own about 10, but have no idea that I’m doing with them.
Looking forward to diving into your content!

Hey Sammy, Nice list of resolutions that you have here. I’ve made some of mine own, and a couple of them seem to be in line with yours. I do have several domain names that I’m not sure if I want to renew or let some of them go. I would like to tighten up my blog, I have a bunch of little things that need tweaking ever since I bought the blog there are certain things that never transfer the right way and I just need to get them fixed. I also would like to be able to relax a little bit more, although one of my resolutions is to post more but I’m spending far too much time at the laptop. If anyone gets into blogging thinking that there isn’t much work involved with it and that at least you’re home working… let me tell you that this is true but it is a full time job that just happens to be at home.I think you should pick a time of day when you say “enough” and put the lt away and step away from the blog! lol Great post!!

    @ JJ

Seriously… the computer is just an absolutely addictive. Well… I’m not sure about addictive, but in my life it’s an “absolute must”… there’s really NO survival if I stop hopping on the computer, so I try to limit myself to only necessities… especially as of lately. I wanted to make one of my goals to blog daily, but nah… I’d rather try and churn out more quality content at my own pace if I can rather than try and populate the blog with random posts. I think I’ve got an interesting one coming up that affects a lot of businesses and/or people… so it might be fun to check back!

Considering I make 0 from this blog, I try to maintain it in a comfortable way. A majority of other people have their blogs pay the bills, but I purely set this one up just so I can rant/help others. Judging by my e-mails, I think I’m doing an “OK” job :)

    @ Everyone:

Thanks for the comments! 2009 should be a pretty wild ride. For some reason I’m predicting much less revenue this year than last.
