Alexa.com has recently allowed its users to download a free updated daily list of the sites it has calculated to be the Top 1,000,000 on the net. A once “not free nor cheap ($2,500)” privilege is now available for all to download at this link.

Here’s an opportunity to take a look and see what the top 500 sites on the net (take that with a grain of salt–there is always a lot of arguing about how inaccurate Alexa’s statistics are). You might get some great ideas for some sites of your own by checking out to top million sites on the net (even though I really don’t think anyone has that much time). Remember: Alexa can only rank a site if they use the Alexa widget or if the user that visits the site has the Alexa toolbar installed on their browser. This is the reasoning why many people believe that the ranking system Alexa uses isn’t that great. The way I see it is the top 10,000 sites are pretty legit since you reach a point where it’s extremely hard to game and manipulate your Alexa rankings (I’m NOT telling anyone to do this nor giving advice, I’m just mentioining an opinion). So, anything above 100,000, in my opinion, might be a load of bull, but when you start getting into the top 500 or top 2000 sites on the net on that list, I really think it becomes fairly accurate.

Note: The downloaded file is about 9.50MB and in order to view it, you must have a .CSV reader (such as Microsoft’s Excel)

Alright, you guys are probably already on site 54,054. Enjoy!

I just finished writing an browser based tool to help me search the data (since my version of Excel was only able to open the first 65,000 records).

Instead of manually reviewing the list, I can now enter in a keyword to search all sites in the Alexa top million.

The data is pretty interesting. In addition to checking on competitors, it’s possible to get a list of top trafficked domains by domain extension.

    For example, I found…

    565,805 sites using .com
    70,640 sites using .net
    48,810 sites using .org
    13,135 sites using .info
    3939 sites using .biz
    3628 sites using .tv
    3107 sites using .eu
    227 sites using .mobi

If you would like to try the tool out, it’s located at

http://www.popularity.info and can search the entire list in about 10 seconds.
