Never Use Dictionary Words As Domains… Oh Yeah, LLL.com Are Junk Domains

Posted on | September 26, 2008 | 5 Comments

It amazes me how some people find the nerve to give information like this. I was randomly browsing Digital Point Forums and I saw a thread and decided to read it. I absolutely HATE making this post, but seriously, out of frustration, I just need to. Why spread ridiculous information and hurt other people?

Tips to Choose domain name for your business

I figured it was going to be another random thread giving people some common sense information regarding what type of domains to go for (short, keyword rich, etc) but HECK NO. I just HAD to blog about this!

1. Never go for the long domain – try to get as short urls like 5 to 8 digit
2. Never use Usless domains – Domains like axd.com , asd.com , ill.com never buy these junk domains. they all are useless.
3. Try to get Complete Unique domains – I know all the domains are unique, but here unique means not related to other sites. for example google.com and zoogle.com the are looking same. don;t buy any domain related to other site.

4. don;t register the dictionary word – If you wanna start a bussiness then never register a domain which is avaialble in dictionary . there is a lot of problem during trademarking that word.

5. Once you choose the domain search in google with your domain and see the keyword relevancy. if you getting below 5000 results then it mean you are registering a good domain . try to get new domain which is new for the world. make sure that your word is not the part of any domain.

6. Finally register your domain and setup a business on it

Let’s dissect the information one by one:

1. I disagree. Sometimes you need to make your point and longer domains will do just fine. Why not? If you’re buying a 3+ worded domain (which anything above 3 is really pushing it for me), purchase the LLL.com if you REALLY do want a shorter URL. But NEVER go for long domains? C’Mon… I would register domains like CheapMortageRates.com, WebmasterForums.com, and GameForums.com. Those are all fabulous domains that explain the site very well.

2. God no… I don’t agree with this at all. Why not use an LLL.com?! C’mon… calling them JUNK nearly gave me a heart attack. If you can afford an LLL.com and feel like it makes your image look better, DO IT. They are NOT junk.

3. I somewhat agree with this, but getting Game.com vs Games.com… they look alike, so there are exceptions to the rule.

4. ABSOLUTELY DISAGREE WITH THIS 100%. If you can get a premium generic dictionary word such as sports.com, DO IT. Don’t be scared to build a business around a dictionary word! In fact, owning something like CARS.COM and BRANDING IT AS THE BUSINESS WORKS EXTREMELY WELL.

I saw the sale of Hometown.com on the Moniker Live Domain Auction for $30,000 and went “Wow, wonder if Hometown Buffet went for that name”. They use buffet.com as their main site, but this domain would have completed the image. Either way, I’d value buffet.com as a more valuable name compared to hometown.com… they complement each other, nonetheless.

If you can get planes.com and you a company that sells planes, DO IT. Build a site on it and have a company domain as well. Sheesh!

5. Absolutely not true. I would definitely register a domin with higher search results. Anything made up, such as, bamfizzle, will get low Google results. If you find a domain with tons of Google results, it just means you’re going to have to work harder at getting your site to the top of the SERPs. Why try and go for a keyword that’s barely used? If you find something descriptive with low search results, you’ll probably get top ranks anyways… assuming the keyword is complete crap and doesn’t receive any organic search traffic.

6. Probably the only one I truly agree with.

I have to agree with you completely. That other guy’s advice was just plain and simple wack.

Your take on this certainly makes more sense than the other guy giving out his advice. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the blog post. That other person was just talking crazy. I mean, I understand the concern about not being able to trademark a dictionary word, but if you autorenew the domain name you should never have to worry about losing it by accident. Dictionary words are great for type in traffic.
