Alright… I’d expect some .ME prices to naturally go for a lot (a couple thousand) and other mediocre names to sell for hundreds… but what the heck is going on? Publicity stunt? Take a look at some of these domains being sold and their current auction price tags:

Toyota.ME going for $70,005. I wonder if TOYOTA is the one bidding on this… NO WAY! They can easily just take their domain since it’s a freakin’ trademark! Oglasi.ME turned out to be “Ads.ME” in Serbian, Crotian, and Macedonian. Interesting that someone would pay $40,000+ for a ccTLD. Why not just try to get Oglasi.ccTLD for Serbia, Crotia, or Macedonia? Maybe .me is just that much more brandable? Who knows. Maybe the current owners don’t want to sell? That’s another possibility.
Domain hack: aweso.ME (awesome) is going for $17,000+. Hrmmm. Skoda.ME also jumps out… $15,000… Not sure if Skoda owns their TM (I’m sure they do, but have never really done any searching regarding the company… which is internationally known).
I’m not saying anything negative regarding .ME (I haven’t bought any and don’t really plan on it), but some of these prices are outrageous for the types of domains that are being purchased. It’s good this TLD is getting recognized, but its purpose is to help the country of Montenegro get online with their own identity. Oh well.
