“Use www.blackle.com. It uses Less Energy”

I was sitting and working online this morning and received an interesting text message:
Use www.blackle.com. It uses less energy than Google. It’s exactly the same.
Being the domainer I am, I needed to check out this so called “Blackle.” What did I see? A “blacked out” version of Google. I guess that Google got some awareness with its “Lights Out” promotion. It is interesting how some people can start some trends. Looking at the homepage it says that there has been “544,143.703 Watt hours saved.” Great marketing? People are actually starting to use this instead of Google?
I think so.
Quick Google search for BlackLE and you get 529,000 results. Blackle.com? 77,700 results. 985 backlinks according to domain-pop.com.
Not bad, huh? I’m also guessing they associated their AdSense PUB-ID with the search function on Google Custom Search and are making some money with it.
Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. “Image displayed is primarily a function of the user’s color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen.” Roberson et al, 2002
Well, just wanted to give them a little more recognition. I hate to say this, but I won’t be using Blackle.com. I’m fine with using some more energy (ouch… sorry to the environmentalists) and will continue with the white background since it is more appealing to my senses.
