My Take On .ASIA

Posted on | March 29, 2008 | 2 Comments

I’ve been getting a lot of e-mails and PMs from people asking me about .ASIA. [For those of you living under a rock (or who don't read my blog), .ASIA domains are now up for registration at registrars such as GoDaddy, Moniker, and Dynadot]. In the least offensive way, I think that .ASIA is a SEMI waste of time. The crap that some people have been registering is just JAW-DROPPING. WHY?! WHY! WHHHHHHY!

I started writing this blog post as a mini bash on DOT asia-biz-eu-bullshit tld. I just don’t feel bad about not getting in on .asia. Everyone is talking about getting all these marvelous keywords, but I really don’t care. Hell, some people I’ve spoken to have told me they have already purchased hundreds. I always say “Goodluck.” Normal response is: Why haven’t you bought any?

I haven’t bought any because I know I’m going to be buying and not making any money off of .asia in terms of generating revenue for domain parking. That’s my thing. I like buying domains that have traffic, and .asia can’t satisfy this desire. If someone proves me wrong and has a .asia with natural type-in, let me know. I’ll start looking into it. Till then, NO! It’s just like .MOBI. I didn’t buy into .mobi (screwed up and let one .mobi slip while in my cart at Dynadot), and I don’t regret it. I like to stick with the traditionally known tlds–.com, .net, and hell–.org. Other than that… I’m a bit weary. I like to try and “play things safe.”

Some people have also told me that .asia is the BEST WAY TO TARGET AN ASIAN AUDIENCE. Oh how wrong you are. There is a better and much more user-friendly way. Do some research and you will probably find out “how.”

Thats really all I have to say on this. I’ll put a little snippet of the previous post (started to ramble about way too much):

“I’m just going to say that I think .asia is junk. Hell, even .biz is a somewhat waste of time. (Remember Honduras.biz selling for $300? Mhhmm.)”
“It isn’t the same as having an old box of baseball cards just sitting and collecting dust while you wait for some baseball card collector to offer you a million bucks for that card you found in a box of Cracker Jacks.”

(My point in this is that you have a name just sitting there in hopes of receiving a big offer. If you hold somegeneric keywords, possibly… but when people are starting to go off “on a tangent” and buy some wacky domains with a wacky extension… uhh… no.)

Enough! Invest Wisely.

People are gambling on the fact that most of the population
would become internet savvy and dot asia might pick up.

But I agree with you and remain apprehensive about dot asia success.

Other than top premium generic keywords I wouldn’t lock up my
    money there.

I love your baseball card analogy.

I know a guy who seriously thought that his baseball cards that he started collecting in the early 1990′s, and that were printed in the 1990′s, were going to go up so much in value he could retire. He totally bought into the frenzy of card collecting and he was blind to the market ever cooling. He is cleaning windows now for a living.

Same thought process exists with some domainers it seems.
