SEO… Can The Smallest Change Can Affect Your Traffic?

Posted on | January 3, 2008 | 2 Comments

I had a site that was ranked pretty well for its domain keyword. It wasn’t making great revenue,Homer Simpsons D’oh but it made enough… and some. I decided I would make the site a little more user-friendly and changed some stuff around. Well, my rankings dropped. At first I thought it must be some sort of crappy Google re-arrangement going on, but then after 2 weeks decided that maybe, just maybe my changes affected my rank. I’m not an SEO guru. I feel like I can optimize a site, but not do anything crazy and get super high rankings for extremely popular terms, but I know that changes can affect the way a site is ranked. I moved a lot of text that had to do with the sites keywords to the bottom of the page and the interesting stuff to the top. OK… I know Google reads from top to bottom so I said screw it, I think I can pull it off… well, maybe I couldn’t. I just put the site back the way it was before. The deal with the redesign was because it got hacked, so I freshened things up.

I guess now I just need to sit and wait. It was doing fine for 5+ months (except in September there was a HUGE decrease of traffic since it was dropped for the main keyword).

I decided to do a bit of searching for some of my favorite SEO websites. You got these:

http://www.bulkseo.comBulk SEO lets you check a bunch of things for a site (or multiple sites–which is why I love it). This works great when checking a bunch of sites and wanting to compare them (expired domains anyone? :) ). It’s also managed by the famous DotSauce. DotSauce is a blog I enjoy being subscribed to. Check it out if you have time.

http://www.digpagerank.comDig Page Rank is a site I often use to check the PR of sites. Great basic design makes me always go back.

http://www.iwebtool.com -iWebTool is just a site with a TON of things on it. This one really needs no explanation since it is fairly well know. A bunch of tools on there to do just about everything.

And……. The Winner:

http://www.fka200.com/domain-toolsFka200 Domain Tools is just a mini tool I added a while ago to the blog. It’s an Alexa/Backlinks/PR Checker.

Just kidding about the whole winner thing. I feel like for proper website optimization it’s best to use a bunch of sites to check things instead of one. And it might be smart to check out some SEO blogs and read up on what some of the SEO gurus are doing. I always preach search engine traffic is the best way to increase revenue since it’s targeted traffic.

And the rule of thumb is… it isn’t traffic that bring you money (if monetizing), it’s targeted traffic.

I’ll keep you guys updated on the ranking of the site. I’m going to give it 1-2 weeks and see what happened.

I also offered to guest post on Jason Pereira’s blog, The University Kid. I enjoy going there and reading the stories and since he’s busy, I figured I might as well try to throw together an article and put it up :) . As if I don’t have a hard enough time posting here….. nah! I always manage to post stuff. I just like to make sure my articles are meaty and not half-assed (sorry if you feel they are).

I also just signed up for Kontera contextual ad network yesterday night. I signed up before, but there was an issue with my site. When I signed up my hosting when down and I didn’t get approved. I’m hoping to try it out since maybe it can add extra revenue to the sites. Extra revenue is always good, right? Depends. If it starts costing you traffic and your users enjoyment, then I feel you are in fact losing money since a site should always be about the traffic. Just like in retail, Customers Are Number 1! I went for the plunge after seeing Randy Brown’s catchy DP signature: “I earn more in my forum with Kontera than from Adsense.” I figured what the hell, I might as well.

Ever since Domaining.com went up, I found a bunch of new blogs that I check daily. I don’t add them to my blogroll since I forget, but one that I really enjoy going to for latest news and such is Green Taxi. You can see that it did make it to my “My Favorite Places” in my sidebar. Conor over at Green Taxi was nice enough to blog about adding my link to their blogroll, so I figured I would return the favor.

Thank you! P.S: I replied to the e-mail you sent me, Conor.

Take care all. Make sure your sites are working! I visited some sites today only to find that they were down (like BlogEngage.com). I also see that BlogEngage.com is probably going to get a new owner. Ahhh. Best of luck! It’s a great domain/networking site.

Hey, I think the smallest change does affect your SEO positioning. Take for example the simplest of things renaming files. If you rename a file to have a keyword as the name it will help your SEO positioning not by much but will help.

Also thanks for those links looks like some great tools I can test out.
