Why You Should Invest $6.99 And Get Your Own Domain

I’ve seen a lot of people who bitch about getting traffic to their blogs/sites. When they come on to the forum and ask how they can get traffic to their sites, the responses are always the same: work your ass off with unique content, build links, seo, market the domain, etc. OK. Great. But a scenario I see often is that people end up doing all this work for a blogspot domain. People might not care and want to make their money using AdSense with $0 investment, but wouldn’t it be smart if you purchased a domain and had control over it? Thing ahead. What if you’re domain is super successful? Wouldn’t you want to own it? Let’s say someone is actually interested in buying your brand. If you owned your own domain, you could sell it for more. Remember, this is just a hypothetical situation.

Here’s something you need to remember:

1) Free subdomain accounts are usually LONG. For example: yourkeyword.blogspot.com -> TWENTY TWO CHARACTERS (22). You can be sure as hell type-ins probably won’t come your way.

2) Building links for a domain you don’t own -> Imagine building 10,000 backlinks for SOMEONE ELSE. Yeah, that’s what you’re doing with a free domain.

3) If you quit, you can’t park your domain. Let’s say you work on your blog for a year and decide you want to shut it down. If you owned your domain, you could just park it. Since you don’t own your domain, you can’t park it. Parking brings in revenue also.

4) Unprofessional. If you have a decent domain it would look a hell of a lot better than Subdomain.FreeDomains.com.

All I’m trying to say is you should spend $6.99 at Godaddy and buy a damn domain. If you have hopes at making $100/month for example, you’re going to be motivated to bring traffic to your blog. This means you’re going to do your job at doing all the basic SEO to the site. Why not just spend $6.99 and get a domain that you have control over and work with that? Now if you use a free host that’s something else… and those ARE available online… but the domain is extremely important, in my opinion. Even if you are opting for a keyword filled domain, at least it will be yours.

Just a mini rant. I feel bad seeing people work so hard bringing traffic to a blogspot domain.

I would have to agree with you 100% fka200. I think dedicating your time to another domain is silly and leave you with nothing to show for it in the end. Come to think about it I don’t really see to many nice Blog at Blog Spot. They are mostly used for cheap advertising people. Have you noticed this or is it just me?

I say 1 out of every 10 blogspot blogs I visit is a decent one the rest are crap!

I think owning a domain name is so cheap now everyone should do it 100%

I agree 100%. I assume 70% of the blogspot blogs are MFAs. If anyone wants to take you seriously, shell out the money and get a domain that you have control over.

I just spent 40 minutes SEOing this blog. I would’ve never bothered with a blogspot domain!
