Domain Investors Rejoice! – Domains Protected… Yipee!

You heard right! Domains are NOW protected for ICANN-Accredited Domain Name Registrars! I’m not sure if anyone had domains at Registerfly registry (click the link to read the story), but some had a lot of problems transferring out their domain names when the registry went under. On CNN.com, there was just an article posted titled “Iron Mountain Digital’s Escrow Program Helps Secure Internet Address System for ICANN-Accredited Domain Name Registrars – Registrant Data for 90 Million Domain Names Protected.” This is absolutely great news for people with domain investments (purchasing domains to park, resell, or just to hold). It’s always been a fear of mine that a majority of my premium domains would end up stuck at some shady registrar and one day they will lose their ICANN Accredited status and a story like Registerfly will take place. Well, thankfully now we don’t have to worry as much about that! Woo Hoo!
Here’s a little information direct from the article:
Iron Mountain Digital is a neutral third party that offers escrow services to safeguard intellectual property assets, until a release event occurs. Under this escrow program, the pertinent and critical information for a party registering a domain name is held in escrow with Iron Mountain. This protects all of the consumers and businesses that have registered domain names with an ICANN-accredited registrar because their data will be safeguarded even if the registrar goes out of business or ceases operations. Holding this data in escrow also helps with business continuity efforts in the case of a failure with a registrar’s data storage systems.
So, this might not change much, but it at least puts the market at ease. Before, people would always sit and talk about how they shouldn’t keep all their eggs (domains) in on basket (one registrar). Now, I believe that if you use an ICANN-Accredited registrar, you shouldn’t really have to worry about another Registerfly repeat.
For people who want a great reigstrar, I recommend you try my favorite registrar: Dynadot.com. There are some things they can work on (I’ve e-mailed them about some issues, and they told me it’s on their to-do feature list… such as the ability to transfer money from one account to another), but overall are amazing. They allow domain credits up to 5 days, so if you buy a domain and no longer want it, just delete it. You can’t get money back, but they will give you credit to purchase another domain.
For those who are going to start using Dynadot.com, I’d appreciate you using my referral code:

**ATTENTION**
If you do decide to register more domains and don’t want to develop, I suggest to park your domains.

I’m not too sure what it is about my Domain Register and Hosting Company but I feel very safe using their services. The company is Godaddy and I have never had an issues with them. I’ve been with them now for about 1.5 years and have zero complaints.
