Firefox 3 Beta 1 Available For Download

Mozilla recently released Firefox 3 Beta 1 and made it available for download. I decided not to blog about it until I could share my experiences with my readers.
First off, It’s available in a bunch of languages. So if you want to beta test, you can feel free to download it in your native language if it’s available. Here is a link: Firefox 3 Beta 1
OK. So I first downloaded this two days ago and decided to give it a try. I installed it over the top of my current Firefox (Firefox 2.0.0.9). The installation was good–no errors. I was most afraid of losing my bookmarks since I have about 50, but I didn’t. After installation, it seemed that everything looked the same. There was really no difference till I went on a website and typed in my username/password. Instead of a little window popping up asking if you wanted to save your password, never, etc. the dialog actually was on TOP–underneath the toolbar bookmarks. A feature also added is the zoom feature… it’s more advanced now. When you zoom in, pictures also get zoomed in. I thought that was kind of cool…
A VERY annoying feature was using the zoom feature by: control+scroll on the mouse. When scrolling down, the page used to zoom in. Not it zooms out. They did the opposite of the current 2.0 version–which really irritated me. I didn’t check out the menu to see if it can be changed, but was wondering why it was like that by default. Actually, I did check if it can be changed. I couldn’t find it anywhere in the menu options!! After using it for a little bit, I visited some UTF-8 encoded websites using languages like Russian/Chinese/Japanese/etc. The coding would come out extremely weird. I had a user on Digital Point Forums PM me a message that was in UTF-8 encoding, and it worked fine–but when the text was in a quote, it would turn into weird boxes with numbers in it. When copy pasted somewhere else, like Word, the characters would in fact come out correctly. This alone was a good enough reason for me to uninstall it–I NEED UTF-8 working properly since I have people that need me to optimize their sites, even if they are in different languages. I don’t want to go through the hassle of not being able to view it properly.

Without needing to copy paste all the features (there are a ton supposedly in the Release notes), here is the direct link to Mozilla’s Firefox 3 Beta 1 Release Notes. As you can see, security is being worked on a lot–which is great. This is where browser such as Internet Explorer 6 (hopefully going to go extinct soon) went terribly wrong. There were so many holes in IE6 that it was just garbage. Also, for those that don’t know, CSS was also an issue in IE6–a lot of the stuff was incompatible.
OK guys and gals, I gave you guys the links if you want to try it out. Like I said, I uninstalled it. It was just weird. I felt like Firefox 2.0.9 (I just got a pop-up saying Firefox 2.0.10 will be installed on the next restarts) is a lot more faster. Firefox 3 Beta was just sluggish for me. So, you have been forewarned! With all betas, I suggest a back-up.
Leave some comments if you run into any major problems with this. I’d be interested in knowing so I can warn others.

Great thanks for the info! I didn’t even know Fire Fox was developing a new release. From your blog it sounds like a decent web browser. I’m not too sure why Fire Fox has developed a new one I’m pretty satisfied with the current version but non the less I’m off to download and install it now.
Thanks again for the information,
cheers
