Moniker’s GeoDomain Auction: Sucked?

Well, with news going around the domaining industry about Monikers GeoDomain Auction yesterday, it seems that there is a general agreement that sellers had high expectations with their high reserves. The one that sticks out the most to me is Honduras.biz. Honduras, for those that don’t know, is a country with a population of about 7.5million. It’s in Latin America, near El Salvador and Nicaragua. Now, why does this stick out to me the most? It’s because it sold for $300! Jeez. A country name, $300? I’d assume even the .info could fetch more than that. It just shows that extension makes a difference. Now, this can easily be developed and can make back the $300 in no time, but it seems most domainers that are purchasing look for type-in names. I guess .biz is a really crappy extension, right? I really don’t think so. Some names work for .BIZ, and I believe quality keyword domains, such as country names, are appropriate for the .biz gTLD. I also think I own one (I’m not even sure what it is). But, this just shows to focus on the main TLDs: .com, .net, and even .org.

Also a link to the sold domains (already posted above, but here it is on the official website):

So, was this auction a flop with sales @ ~$450Kish? I’d assume so since one domain was sold for $200K. A lot of country names were passed on. Now, was this auction properly advertised? I’d say so since a lot of the people that keep up with the domaining industry were informed. Maybe we will see better results next time.
